As the Fraser Valley becomes steadily more culturally diverse communications and understanding becomes more important in all areas of life, and particularly in the areas of health, human services and education. The University-College of the Fraser Valley is offering a two-day interactive workshop entitled Cross-Cultural Sensitivity that will look at some of the cultural issues facing our community today. The workshop will be of interest to nurses, therapists, social workers, or anyone who works in the health corrections or education fields. "Really, the workshop will be beneficial to anyone who works with people of different cultures," says Gloria Wolfson, UCFV Social Services program head. "As we interact with clients from a variety of cultural backgrounds, we must become more sensitive to their communication patterns and ways of interacting with the system." During the workshop, participants will explore their own cultural attitudes and values, and learn how to meet the needs of their clients who come from non-mainstream cultures more effectively.

The workshop will focus on developing an increased sensitivity to communication patterns and ways of interacting with Mennonlte Saturday, Mar. 5, 1994 at 1:30 p.m. at the Chapel of Henderson's Funeral Home, Rev. Bob McMullen officiating. Cremation at Valley Crematorium.

"Many organizations are in a rapid change process right now that is challenging them to meet the demand of working in a multicultural environment," says Sandy Chinery, co-orindator of the Community Support Worker program at UCFV, who will co-facilitate one of the workshops. "I feel it's very important to have staff training which addresses issues of cultural awareness, race relations, human rights, valuing diversity, and employment equity." Cross-Cultural Sensitivity will be offered at UCFV campuses: March 24 and 25 in Chilliwack, and April 14 and 15 in Mission.

The fee is $105, which includes a comprehensive resource manual recently published by the UCFV Press. "The manual was a collaborative effort by a team of UCFV ad community cross-cultural experts," says Wolfson. "We are giving it to the workshop participants but it is for sale to the public at the UCFV bookstore for about $22."
