B4 THE CHILLIWACK PROGRESS, Wednesday, October 27, 1993 I ii i (Q)tbfittoMirn(g3 Christian school reaches 10th year One summer evening in 1982 a group of parents met for a Bible Study in the home of Jackie Harvey. After discussion on many different topics, the conversation turned to the issue of education, specifically Christian education. The concerns that were raised stirred Harvey to action. She contacted several people in the Christian community and eventually formed a steering committee. The task of this committee was to develop the philosophy goals, policies and curriculum of a Christian school.

They looked to form a school that would move beyond denominational boundaries wanted children to spend their schooling in a place that reflected the Christ-centred teaching of their homes," said Harvey One year later, on Sept. 1, 1983 Valley Christian School was It was a humble beginning with only 32 students meeting in the rented facility of the Church of the Nazarene. After only two years these facilities became inadequate forcing the school to move to Highland Community Church. Continued growth compelled yet another move to Central Heights Church where Valley Christian School is presently located. In 1987 a second campus was opened at Cedar Valley Mennonite Church in Mission.

Since then the school has branched out into a third community with the addition of a Chilliwack campus meeting in the Alliance Church since 1991. This year is the 10-year anniversary of Valley Christian School; it will be celebrated with a banquet on Nov. 23. Many changes have taken place in the past 10 years and many more are expected in the near future. One of these is building a school facility on a five-acre parcel of land located in Matsqui Village.

The ever-increasing demand in recent years for good, quality, Christ-centred education has seen an influx of students into the Christian schools. Enrolment for the three campuses of Valley Christian School has grown to almost 400 students. This continual growth has promoted the original format of Kindergarten to Grade 7 to be expanded this fall with the addition of Grades 8 and 9. The proposal to add on Grade 10 will be implemented by the fall of 1994. The theme for this school year is "Jesus the Light of the World" and with that in mind the students are being encouraged to reach out to their community as well as into the world.

Several new prospects are under way to help them do that. There is the Adopt a Grandparent program with trips to the local nursing homes, a Community Service Day and Evangelism through Drama. An overseas outreach is also in the planning stages, with a trip to Romania expected in the spring of '94. The primary goal of VCS is to provide a Christ-centred education that would meet the spiritual, intellectual, emotional and physical needs of its students. NETTEY BERTHA EMILY HOPKINS Mrs.
