"When I first went to the classroom and knew one of the answers, I got called a genius and I thought, 'oh no, here we go but then I decided that I was there to learn, and it didn't matter what anyone might say.

Mostly it was very exciting to be with other students, working together and encouraging each other." She also has fond memories of her tutors. Newby and math tutor Dennis Singer, who provided emotional support and understanding along with tutoring. "Gail knew how to keep me going.

I had an interest in my work, but I also wanted to please her, since she was so willing to give me her time." After working with Newby for a year, she entered ABE classes, and progressed through basic, intermediate, and advanced English. Then she got the courage to start math. "I was facing the same problem I'd faced in Grade 3 fear of being judged, but then I realized that my tutor was there to help me, not judge me," she says. She had a stack of pamphlets from Fraser Valley College (now the University-College of the Fraser Valley), but it wasn't until her youngest child was in high school that she worked up the courage to look into her own educational options.

Five years later, she has progressed from the fundamental level of adult basic education, where she started with a volunteer tutor, through the intermediate and advanced levels of ABE and earned her Grade 12 equivalency. Her schooling had been interrupted at the Lrade 6 level when she was a child in Paraguay because of illness in the family. Later she managed to finish Grade 9 and even started nursing training, but when she moved to Canada in 1961 she was faced with learning English, which put another hurdle in her path. Raising a family kept her away from her educational goals for almost two decades, until she decided to take that first step in 1988 and called the college. After initial confusion about finding an appropriate program for her, she connected with ABE instructor Barbara Bate at the Chilliwack campus, who matched her with volunteer tutor Gail Newby.

"I was so scared about phoning the college in the beginning fear kept me back but Barbara was so friendly and helpful that she showed me that the college people were just A worship iGaSsS ckiuirO Mennonite Yarrow United Mennonite Church 4336 Eckert Road, Yarrow Pastor: Dan Rempel 823-4451 9:15 a.m. Sunday School 10:00 a.m. German Service 10:40 a.m. English Service Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Salnti 9845 Carleton St. North Chilliwack 792-7811 Pastor: A.

Sudden, temporary dimness or loss of vision, particularly in one eye. Sudden and temporary double vision. Temporary difficulty in speaking or loss of speech, due to problems in moving tongue or jaw.
