THE CHILLI WACK PROGRESS, Wednesday, June 16, 1993 B5 Square dancers in Chilliwack Student seeks help in funding challenge trip tion of volunteers with approximately 4,200 dancers in 72 member clubs in the Fraser Valley alone. The Federation has nine regions province wide. Members are enthusiasts of square and round dancing as well as of clogging, contra-dancing and other types of North American folk dances. This is the first time Chilliwack has been the chosen to host the festival which is held every second year. The 1995 venue will be Prince George.

The Chilliwack Rhythm Reelers is the local square dance club holding membership in the Federation. The group holds workshop nights each Monday and Tuesday in the Ag-Rec Loft. Open dances are held on the first, third and fifth Saturdays of the month in the Ag-Rec Loft. The local group boasts approximately 200 members of all ages. To join, would-be members many attend new-dancer classes set for October.

For more information, call 858-8882. Region Two of the B.C. Square and Round Dance Federation is hosting this year's provincial folk festival. The region includes Chilliwack and extends form Sechelt on the Sunshine Coast to Boston Bar. Upwards of 2,000 square dancers aged 10-70 and older are expected to attend the June 24-26 event being held at the Chilliwack Exhibition Grounds.

At least 50 internationally-acclaimed callers and cuers will lead the non-stop dancing. Along with dancing, there will also be a pancake breakfast, fashion show and booths selling Western attire. Spectators are welcome at the three-day event beginning each day at 9:30 a.m. Dancing finishes at 10 p.m. nightly.

Korilea Hagkull, 19, heads to Costa Rica on Dec. 5. She is one of 50 people in Canada, five from B.C., participating in an upcoming Youth Challenge International program.

She will work for three months in either a social, environmental or medical setting. The all-volunteer positions will be decided as the departure date draws nearer. As part of qualifying for the trip, Hagkull must raise $3,500 40 per cent of the cost of her excursion. The remainder is provided through the federal Canadian International Development Agency program and various other private sources and -sponsorships.
