Hydro safety officials are once again warning kite flyers and model airplane enthusiasts to stay away from power lines. Even a brush by a kite or model airplane control line against a power line can create a connection strong enough to cause electrocution, says Hydro safety coordinator Earle Prit-chett. "All overhead wires should be avoided," says Mr. Pritchett. "Many people believe that wooden poles carry only telephone wires but most poles also carry power lines operating at high voltage." Power lines are placed in an elevated position to prevent the danger of contact but it takes only a thin kite line to transmit electricity to the ground.

Kites with aluminum frames are especially conductive. Parents and teachers should forbid children to fly kites near power lines and should check kite lines to ensure they are dry. Even string can become a dangerous conductor when wet. Children should be told not to attempt to retrieve a kite or model airplane that does catch on a pole or power line.
