Noted soccer coach Laura Schulz, Carruthers "always gave that extra effort. "A great student and a great team player." Grade 11 boy's athlete of the year, John Dykstra, competed in track and field, and senior soccer and basketball. Sherry Victor, Gr. 10 girl's athlete of the year, played field hockey, basketball, volleyball, soccer and track and field. Victor has qualified for the provincial under-16 and B.C.

Summer Games field hockey teams. (Victor teammate Shelley Duck also qualified for the under-16 squad.) "Always energetic, always doing his best," is how Ogmunson described Gr. 10 boy's athlete of the year Raymond Johnston. Johnston was a member of the junior basketball and volleyball teams and worked with the senior basketball squad. Nasty and nice.

Candy Chapman and Cam Armstrong may have very different styles on the playing field, say their coaches, but the two do have one thing in common they were named Chilliwack Senior Secondary Grade 12 athletes of the year. Described by senior girls' field hockey coach Joe Ogmundson, as being an aggressive "nasty, take-no-prisoners" style of player, Chapman was named the Gr. 12 girl's top athlete, at the 1990 CSSS sports banquet June 6. Chapman also played on the senior girls' soccer team. Armstrong brought a "great attitude" to soccer and basketball, noted senior boys' soccer coach Lindsay Hayes, and was a good sport in both.

For the record: In last week's story on the Chiefs, the Abbotsford Pilots (not the Ab-botsford Flyers) is one of a number of teams the Chiefs are considering as a Junior affiliate. Yarrow Mile: It may have been the Yarrow Mile, but Abbotsford and Coquitlam runners dominated the top plac-ings at the first annual event on June 3. Mark Bomba, of Surrey, was the overall winner in a "very respectable" time of 4:19 minutes, noted race organizer Kim Warawa. Darrell Fox of Coquitlam was second, in a time of 4:24, and Mark Francis, also of Coquitlam, was third at 4:30. The top female runner was Angela Froese, with a clocking of 5:24.

Froese was followed by Jane Lee, at 6:04, and Alexandra Lihou, at 6 07. All three are from Abbotsford. Local favorites, teacher Ron Wickman and Paul Reimer, ran 4:38 and 4:40, respectively. Run on the Yarrow Days' weekend, the Sunday morning race attracted 36 athletes despite the heavy rain. The first-annual event was sanctioned by B.C.

Athletics and the Canadian Track and Field Association and offered $350 in prize money. By all standards the race was a tremendous success, noted Warawa, and next years' race will offer more prize money to attract the top runners from around B.C. New rep soccer team: There is a new youth soccer team forming in Chilliwack. The Division 4 Gold club in the Fraser Valley Youth Soccer Association is looking for players born in 1977 or 1978 with the "ability to play rep soccer at the gold level," noted manager John Douglas. If interested call Douglas at 858-8641.

Division 2 tryouts: The Division 2 Fraser Valley Youth Soccer Association Chilliwack Huskies will be holding tryouts for boys born in 1975 or later. Those interested in the late June session should call coach Charlie Thomson at 794-3331. Loser's tournament: At least one losing team in the Player's Arms Sports Lounge Slo-Pitch league is sure to be a winner after this weekend's play. The circuit's first annual loser's tournament is getting set to go. The bottom eight teams in the 17-team league will battle it out for trophies and cash prizes at the Jimmy Indian Reserve from Friday through Sunday.

The tournament will conclude with final presentations Sunday afternoon. Beer gardens and food are a part of the weekend. The last eight teams in the league, as of May 30, were Doc's Auto Body, Value Mattress, Unruh's, Sport and Ski Magazine, Superior Door Beer Busters, Spindaleer, Friendly Mike's Pub and O'Conner Recreational Vehicle Kangaroos. Three days left to register: Just three days remain before register closes for the 1990 Chilliwack Air-Frontiersmen Basketball Camp. Deadline for registering is Friday for the Grade 4-9 basketball camp that runs Aug.
