Presbyterian Church chanced to see an ad regarding the bill in his hometown New Brunswick newspaper. He reported to the Fetterly parents and thus it was that the bill was part of Norman's welcome home. Norman Fetterly died in 1939 and Walter in 1969. Corliss married Marjorie Chadsey, granddaughter of Isaac Kipp and farmed on Prest Road until his death in 1976 at age 86. The five dollar bill is now the prized possession of a great granddaughter of Corliss Fetterly because the Fetterlys remember.

FRIDAY fetterly BROTHERS The Fetterly brothers of Chilliwack were prisoners of war during the First World War. Left to right are Norman, 18, Corliss, 24 and Walter, 22. miracle they were alive and together.

They said that they were well treated, but asked for letters so that they could have "something to read." Some of their fellow prisoners died and the men collected one-half mark from each in-mate's meagre allowance to erect a war memorial to their lost comrades. This memorial stands today in Hamelin. The prisoners attended the dedication. The Fetterlys also wrote about the beautiful cherry trees in bloom outside their prison quarters. Late in the war these trees assumed greater significance.

The prisoners, desperately hungry, ate every leaf in sight. The piece of black bread was a reminder of how thankful the Fetterlys were to be liberated and returned to England on New Year's Day, 1919, and to Canada in March 1919. On the back of the accompanying picture there is a moving notation "Prisoners of War: 44 months, one day, four hours." The five dollar bill was also a reminder of the war experience. Norman had written his name in ink on a Merchants' Bank five dollar bill. The bill had remained in his wallet through the trenches of France and Belgium to Ypres.

When he was captured his wallet was taken by the Germans and subsequently sent to Berlin, Holland, England and back to Canada. Rev. Harry Fraser of Cooke's By Lois Dickinson Chilliwack Museum and Historical Society A much-travelled five dollar bill and a piece of black bread were the tangible mementoes which for many years reminded the Corliss Fetterly family of his deliverance from a prisoner of war camp in the First World War. In 1907 David and Isabella Fetterly brought their children from Ontario and took up farming on Prest Road. Seven years later, three of their sons Corliss, Walter and Norman were prisoners of war in Germany.

The brothers, Corliss 24, Walter 22 and Norman 18, joined up at the outbreak of war in August, 1914. Corliss was with the 7th Infantry Battalion of the Westminster Regiment. In April 1915, at the Battle of Ypres, Corliss saw what he later described as "every imaginable kind of artillery and the terrible gas." He was wounded and his brothers, who were involved in the same action, stopped to assist him. All three were captured. Back home in Chilliwack, separate telegrams came within a 24-hour period informing the Fetterly parents tht their three sons were missing in action.

The entire community was filled with anxiety, awaiting news. Finally, after nearly three months, word came that the brothers were together in a prison camp near the famous town of Hamelin, Germany. They wrote home reporting that it was a MORNING GD www "The PvtrWM PwmT (1936) Leslie Howard. Bette Davis.
