1 6 THE CHILLIWACK PROGRESS WEEKENDER, Friday, July 3, 1992 National slo-pitch tourney at Townsend Park in July Squirt 'C girls host provincials The Squirt 'C girls B.C. Softball championships are currently being conducted at Townsend Park in Chilliwack. A provincial champion will be crowned at Townsend Park on Sunday (July 5), with 14 teams vying for the honor. Two of the entries are from Chilliwack, with Yarrow Building Supplies representing District 8 (Fraser Valley East) and Fraser Valley Foods gaining entry as the host team. Other teams involved in the event are Victoria Dolphins, Campbell River Eagles, North Vancouver Terminators, Richmond Roger Raiders, Surrey Wild Things, Kelowna Cruisers, Trail Esso Stingers, Merritt Jackson Stingers, Ridge Meadow Harder Security, North Delta Blue Jays, Quesnel Yellowhead and Nanaimo.

Today (Friday) and tomorrow features round-robin play, with the playoffs on Sunday. Not to be outdone, the Yarrow Rainbow Food and Gas Bar Squirt 'C boys are in Williams Lake, also playing for a provincial championship. lots of runs. It continues to be one of the fastest growing sports in Canada. Event organizers have arranged for a beer garden, team barbecues and other social events.

Locally there are 60 co-ed slo-pitch teams, many of which will participate in the provincial co-ed slo-pitch tournament is planned for Aug. 21-23 in Chilliwack. The senior men's 50-plus division is the Canadian qualifier for the World Series to be held in Wayne County, Michigan.

Slo-pitch is a modified version of softball. The pitch must be a high arc and slow, thus creating an exciting hitting game, marked by outstanding defensive plays and Chilliwack will host a slo-pitch national championship tournament at the end of the July. More than 40 slo-pitch teams from across Canada will bid for the national title in a tournament being held at Townsend Park July 30 to Aug. 3. As well as providing some of the best men's 'A' division play in Canada, the economic spinoffs in tourism for the district are expected to be big.

Over the five-day Swim- From 14 circle in the 50 butterfly for nine-and-10-year-old girls. Roth, nine, faced stiff competition and managed to final in several other events, placing fourth in the 50 freestyle, fifth in the 100 butterfly, sixth in the 100 backstroke and breaststroke, and eighth in the 100 freestyle. Roth joined Dunmall, Tara Langlois and Micheal-Ann Miller on the nine-10 girls 200 medley relay team which finished seventh. Ken Larsen has developed into one of the top ll-and-12 backstroke swimmers in the province. He won the 100 backstroke and placed second in the 200 event.

Larsen was seventh in the 200 IM and eighth in the 100 200 and 400 freestyle. Teammate Neil Evans swam to fourth place in the 200 breaststroke and the 200 IM. Evans added sixth place finishes in the 50 and 100 freestyle, 100 butterfly and a seventh in the 200 freestyle. Natasha Dunmall swam personal bests in six events in the ll-and-12 girls category, but failed to medal in any of them. Sarah Dennis came away with a silver medal in the 50 freestyle and raced to fifth place in the 100 and 200 freestyle.

Dennis also had a big breakthrough in her backstroke placing sixth in the 100 event. Amy Olson came fourth in the 100 and fifth in the 200 breaststroke and snuck into the final of the 50 freestyle placing eighth. Jamie Finby won the bronze medal in the 50 freestyle and swam to fifth in the 100 backstroke. Finley and Bain teamed with Evans and Larsen to come second in the 200 medley relay. Overall the Spartans placed seventh among the 16 clubs in the team standings.

A very respectable effort for 10 swimmers. The Spartans will compete in the 'AAA' 14-and-under championships in Vancouver, July 10-12.
