Rempel supporters and friends of the alleged victims By Paul Bucci Staff Reporter Emotions run high during the first day of Mcnnonitc pastor Walter Aaron Rempel 's sexual assault trial Chilliwack provincial court yesterday (Tuesday). Rempel, who is on the pastoral staff of the Eben-Ezer Mennonite Church in Clearbrook, and a former teacher at the Mennonite Educa fondled the girls' breasts and vaginas, and placed his penis between the legs of one of the victims. The offences were alleged to have taken place while Rempel was a pastor at the Mennonite Brethern Church in Yarrow. The Rempel case has caused division among some members of the Mennonite community. Tuesday's trial concentrated on testimony from the two alleged victims, who can't be identified due to the court ban.

One victim travelled from Saskatchewan to attend the trial. One of the victim's husbands also testified. The court heard testimony from RCMP Const. Timothy Jespersen before going into a voir dire (a trial within a trial, usually held to determine the admissibility of evidence). The trial continues today (Wednesday) and is expected to last four days.

Supporters ringed Rempel as he entered and left the courthouse throughout the trial. At least eight supporters surrounded Rempel as he returned from lunch forming a human wall against curious onlookers. The same supporters obstructed two press photograpers. forcibly pressing their hands against camera lenses and preventing access to the accused man. Tempers dared at the end of the trial when one Rempel supporter briefly blocked the exit of a member of the press.

Rempel was hustled out of the courthouse through a rear door. The accused was arrested in June, I WO. The four offences are alleged to have taken place between Jan. i 980 and Dec 31. 1981 in Yarrow.

The charges include two counts each of gross indecency, and indecent assault. The Crown alleges that in separate incidences, the accused Church denies Rempel defence fund Rempel was a full-time pastor of music at Eben-Ezer but is currently still working with the church at its Wednesday night Bible school for adults, according to head deacon Henry Bergen. But the letter states that Rempel continues to "minister to our children and and pray for their safety Bergen said there are people in the congregation who want to keep this "ball referring to the controversy over Rumpel's charges. "The general feeling here is to support him. but I am aware there are individuals who are the minority and who are looking for trouble," said Bergen.

Leaders of the Eben-Ezer Mennonite Church in Clearbrook deny the church has organized a legal defence fund for a former music pastor who is facing sex-related charges involving minors. The Progress received a letter from a female congregation member who claims that $50,000 has been collected for the defence fund of Walter Aaron Rempel, whose trial started yesterday (Tuesday) in B.C. Supreme Court in Chilliwack.
