THE CHILLIWACK PROGRESS WEEKENDER, Friday, August 2, 1991 55 Try to pay attention, boys i7, rwi Parents worried by sex charges By Christina Toth 'ii' Jr. 4 I I Wool 1)U ylf I But Henry Bergen, head deacon at Eben-Ezer Church, said the church feels comfortable with having Rempel involved in church activities. "We are his congregation, and we decided (in a vote) he will be part of this, and that's the way it is," he said. Bergen admitted that there were some who were against having Rempel involved with church activities until his November trial was finished. "I thought this was over, but I guess not.

I thought church people would be different. We believe in forgiving," he said. He said he could understand parents from outside the church being concerned about their children, although he said they have nothing to worry about. This year the vacation Bible school, which is also open to children from outside that church, is on this week July 29 to Aug. 2 in the evenings.

Rempel was a music pastor at Eben-Ezer until last year. He also taught English and Bible classes at MEI during the 1989-90 school year but was not asked to return after his year-long contract with MEI was over, an administration spokesperson said Monday. MetroValley News Service Some parents are upset that a former Mennonite minister of music charged with sex offences with minors is still involved in church youth programs. Walter Aaron Rempel, who is slated for trial in November, is helping "behind the scenes" to co-ordinate vacation Bible school programs at the Eben-Ezer Mennonite Church in Clearbrook. Rempel was charged earlier this year with two counts of gross indecency and two counts of indecent assault.

The alleged incidents involved teenaged girls and are thought to have occurred in the Chilliwack area about 10 years ago. Parents upset with Rempel's current church work want to get the word out. Parents have a right to know who is involved with their children's Bible classes, said one mother who phoned Monday but refused to give her name. She and another mother, who also called Monday, withdrew their children from last year's vacation Bible school because Rempel was involved. Man charged for separate offences A 20-year-old man already charged with the abduction and sexual assault of a MSA Museum employee will be charged again in connection with a separate incident. Matsqui Police say Raymond Lee Caissie will also be charged following a daylight purse snatching last Tuesday afternoon (July 23). He will be held in custody for 30 days to undergo a psychiatric examination. His next court appearance is Aug. 30.

In the Sunday attack, a young female museum worker was sexually assaulted, robbed and abducted from the Ware Street museum while in her own vehicle. She was taken to a remote area just south of the international boundary and abandoned. In the Tuesday purse snatching, police say a woman was walking with her child on the grounds of Abbotsford Junior High School. A male approached her from behind and demanded her purse. He produced a knife, grabbed the purse and ran.
