100m free (from Pag B9) pitcher Charlene Wright. Wagner's bats were white hot and the Dairy fielding crew treated too many hits like hot potatoes in an error-filled evening. Blank struck first in the third inning on a hit by Tenbrinke who beat her teammate Clupp to homeplate on a single by Archer. She stole home on a flyball. The winning pitcher, Bonnie Dawson ended the four run, four hit inning with a triple.

More than 100 fans watched the game at Monarch Park and were treated to a "color" commentary by league president Ron Wedel. Wagner's upped the count to 24 in the fourth inning that started with a homer by Kerr. Then Blank scored on a single by Clupp. Tenbrinke and Clupp rounded out the scoring for Wagner's. Dairy ended the inning and the match with its second run of the evening scored by Verschur on a base hit by Wright.

The highlight of the inning was a squeeze play that caught Lynn Neuman between third base and homeplate. In Dairy's 9-6 win July 6 to tie the series 2-2 it was Wagner's with the hot bat in the first inning taking a 3-0 lead. Runs were scored by Schwaer-zle, Zurch, and Archer. Clupp made it 4-0 in the second inning on a hit by Zurch and good defence limited Dairy to no hits, no runs, and no errors in the bottom of the inning. Wagner's jumped to a 5-0 lead in the top of the third inning but Dairy retaliated with three of its own to narrow the gap.

Brenda Warring, Verschur, and Grace Van de Velde scored for Dairy. Dairy took a 6-5 edge in the next inning with a trio of runs by Neuman, Vershcur and Van de Velde. Wagner's tied the game 6-6 at the top of the fifth and final inning when Meeres scored on a bunt by Blank but a nifty double play by Dairy limited the damage to one run. Dairy iced the cake at the bottom of the inning with Tamara Peters counting the winning run. Linda Kling and Kim Sabernagel rounded out the scoring forDairy.

The 39-year-old took up 'umping' four years ago following a surgicial operation in 1982 and a subsequent operation in 1988 that has left him unable to play the game. "Being an umpire allows me to stay in contact with the game," he says. "It's not as much fun as playing but it keeps me active." Once a week during the sofball season, McSweeney calls balls and strikes for teams in the fun-oriented leagues. In his youth, McSweeney played senior hardball in Peach River Country, Nelson, and Prince George and was a competitive hockey player as well.

McSweeney and his wife Chris have two active sons, Sean, 6, and Kelsey, 2.
