Kurt Houlden, buildings superintendent of recreation services, describes the chiller as a "giant fridge that is the heart of any refrigeration plant." In the case of the Coliseum, it is a 3,000 kilogram, large pressure vessel that operates on a heat-transfer system, utilizing a primary refrigerant of ammonia and a secondary refrigerant of brine (a water and calcium chloride solution).

The hot spots dark spots of sludge-like substance which travelled at random developed last fall. In the spring, district staff also found a potentially serious problem within the chiller the inside was badly corroded. "We limped through the rest of the season, and submitted a report to council to provide money in our budget to replace the chiller," explained Houlden. "The cost of repair and replacement were so close, that we recommended to replacerThe building itself is 40 years old, and the refrigeration system is 15 years old. That's basically its life expectation." In tackling the hot-spot problem, staff was then faced with the massive task of how to dispose of some 2,500 gallsons of brine, classified as a toxic substance.

"We decided that rather than dispose completely of the brine, we would pump it out, filter it, allow it time to settle, and pump it back into a new, Improved system." They still had to call on the services of a toxic waste disposal firm to dispose of the waste and chemical sludge, at a cost of approximately $4,500. Total brine removal and replacement carried a price tag of $25,000. Along with improvements comes a built-in filter system and a preventative maintenance plan, as well as reduced energy costs. Improvements were also carried out in the plant room, incorporating a color-coded system for safety and easier maintenance. 1988 FORD F-250 CUSTOM 4x4 White.
