B2 THE CHILLIWACK PROGRESS, Wednesday, June 11, 1986 upsets highlight rec softball I -1 I 1 1 Tii i -Tin W3SS mfHmimm CI FVS 1 YV Photo by Jim Hind hitting THE dirt Earthquake Annie's Wayne Kelly Jr. (inset) comes up with a face full of dirt and a stolen base against Yarrow Wood in Men's Rec softball action this Sunday. Annie's took the game 6-0. Sunday by Chris Gadsden Two major upsets on Sunday highlighted the week as Fraser Carpets and Cheam Sports Midgets were at the centre of attention in the Chilliwack Rec Softball League. Carpets' pitcher Shane Fraser, who according to coach Terry Sawchuk "pitched the game of his career," limited the usually potent Cheam Sports Seniors to one hit that a lead-off single to Kelly Martin as the Carpet crew posted a 1-0 victory.

The one run Fraser needed to give him his seventh win of the season came in the fifth as Marv Schier's two-out single plated Rob Reid. Fraser commented on his pitching performance, "After being soundly beaten 10-1 in our interlocking game against Empress Mark Tuesday night, everybody on the team wanted to come up with a good game tonight." Carpets' catcher John Russell said, "Shane threw all the pitches that I called tonight, and he had good control. His rise was back working like Shane can throw it." Third baseman Tony Bal added, "The Cheam batters didn't know what type of pitch Shane was going to throw, especially on the two-strike pitch." The 10-1 loss Fraser alluded to earlier was an 11-hit Empress Mark attack. Mark V's Randy Klebe threw a four-hitter as his teammates seven runs in the third led to the trouncing. The other upset of the week also came Sunday night as the Cheam Sports Midgets had better luck than their senior counterparts.

The Midgets picked up their third win of the season in a 7-3 victory over fourth-place Guenther Doors. Tony Marini pitched his second win of the season, a five-hitter against the usually potent Doors offence. But it was the Midgets who showed offensive power Sunday night, as Rodger Huitema's two-run homer that hit halfway up an outfield light pole gave Cheam a 2-0 advantage in the first inning. The hit that put the game away came in the fifth as Chuck Stade powered a two-run blast over the left centerfield fence off loser Kevin Britz. Coach Pop Arnold was visibly pleased with his team's effort.

"This win sneaks us up in the standings," Arnold said, "Stade's homer won the game for us, giving us the lift we needed." The upset was the Midgets' third win of the season. Huitema and Stade figured in Cheam's second victory as well as the Midgets edged Kent Blitz 9-8 on Monday night (June 2). A lead-off double by Stade and a single by Huitema in the sixth broke an 8-8 tie. Blake Pow collected his first rec league win, pitching in relief of Kevin Skalicky. Kent dropped its other two games of the week, both to New Yorker Steakhouse.

Friday night it was all New Yorkers as they blasted out 18 hits in an 18-2 victory over Kent. Every New Yorker player had at least one hit, while pitchers Ben Fryer and newcomer Doug Martens were touched by Kent bats for only seven. Sunday night was a tighter affair, but the Blitz team remained winless with a 6-1 loss as New Yorker chucker Chris Fryer made his first start a winning one. The Steakhouse's Steve Klassen( continued his hot play, going four-for-four at the plate and moving his average to .371. Klassen was named Geordie's player of the week.

Over the seven-day period he went seven-for-eight, had five RBIs, four stolen bases and four runs scored. Coach Rick Friesen commented that "in the last few games Steve, even on outs, has hit the ball hard." Klassen and the New Yorker club have been a surprise to most early season pundits by occupying top spot in the standings, one point ahead of Fraser Carpets. Earthquake Annies continued to make moves also, winning both of their games as pitchers Dave Ell and Bob Stachera yielded only a single run in two games. The run came in a 3-1 win over Legion Steelers as Ell tossed a three-hitter. Stachera was just as stingy four nights later giving up only two hits as he registered a 6-0 shutout over Yarrow Wood.

Earlier in the week, Jake Wiens' no-hitter kept Yarrow in contention for top spot as the Woodsters blanked Olympic Sports 8-0. Olympic continued to have the late-inning blues as it dropped a heart-breaker Sunday night to the Steelers. The Olympic nine took a 2-1 lead into the sixth inning, but the Steeler bats came alive with five runs and a 6-2 victory. Dennis Hicks led Legion with three hits.

Legion lost their other game of the other game, falling to Jesperson Brake 11-0 as Al Marshall gave up only two hits, both to Empress's Kevin TJnger. Earlier in the week Jesperson put up a good fight but lost 2-0 to Agassiz Airlines in interlocking play. Runs from Doug Duncan and winner Andy Brink in the fourth were all Agassiz needed. Al Marshall gave up three hits in a losing cause, while Brink was touched for four, two each from Norm Roth and Steve Fehr. tin week, 8-1 to Guenther Doors as Ron Derksen tossed a hot two-hitter. Guenther made it two wins in three starts by blasting hapless Empress Hotel 14-3 last Wednesday evening (June 4). Brad Anderson, who went three-for-three, was the only bright light for the Hotelmen as winner Ron Derksen gave up just two hits and Bob Galley three, including Louis Ledoux's first home run in 10 years of rec league play. Fiddlers broke a 5-5 deadlock with three runs in the sixth, while Chevron managed just one run in their half of the frame setting up the dramatic seventh. On the consolation side of the draw, Jones Hill Highways (Road Wreckers) placed first, with ABS Sluggers second and Wooden Shoe third.
