CHILLIWACK PROGRESS, Nov. 8, 1967 Hospital Program (Continued from Page 1) The number of patient-days of care has gone rapidly in the last three years." At the end of 1966 it was 10,100 days per year higher than in 1959. The existing physio-therapy unit, he said, is far too small. Plans are to enlarge it by nine times. Emergency facilities, Mr.

Butcher said, are also gravely inadequate. The extended care unit (formerly Valley Haven) is operating at full capacity with 38 patients. "As has long been known, this facility is grossly below modern and acceptable standards," he declared. "The unit cannot be properly fireproofed and remains a serious fire-hazard. The rooms of patients, particularly the single rooms, are cramped, badly lighted and poorly ventilated.

There is almost no space for an activation program, which is a key point in any up-to-date rehabilitation program. Moreover, unsatisfactory as these facilities are, they can accommodate barely 50 per cent of the number of potenial extended care patients in this regional district." R. A. Adair Construction Ltd. Building Contractors 50 CHEAM AVENUE PHONE 795-3754 Mr.

Butcher pointed out that the expansion program would remedy this "shameful situation" by adding 75 new extended care beds (with a reserve for future requirements) and make it possible to tear down the present wooden buildings. He added that there is hardly a department in the hospital with the sole exception of maternity--which is not bearing an ever-increasing burden and trying to keep up high standards of patient care in face of overtaxed facilities. The expansion plan, as drawn up by Paul D. Smith, in association with engineers D. W.

Thomson Company and Thorson and Thorson, would place the expansion on the west of the present hospital building. It would be roughly cruciform in shape, and consist mainly of two storeys. His views were endorsed by the executive, with only one dissenting vote recorded. The specified area established by council to enable use of section 616 includes all municipal residents, and for all practical purposes benefits the complete municipality, Mr. Branson said. He said transfer of the tax load to improvements only "places an unfair load on industrial, commercial and residential establishments." It is in these establishments that improvements represent the major portion of total assessment, he commented. Elimination of land from the tax base cuts approximately one-third from the total values to be taxed, the preamble to the Branson resolution said.
