The year's highlights have been the start and fast progress on the BCER's big Jones lake hydro-electric project, for which the first contract was awarded last January, and commencement of the new 60,000 volt power line to. In addition was Hope's out standing contribution to the 1951 Red Cross funds campaign, the highest over-subscription in the province. The shut-down of all logging last summer, due to the unusually long dry spell and the many fires in and around the area, are among the not-so-bright memories; as are the floods and following heavy snow-slides of last winter, which cut Hope off from the rest of the world for three days, severing all rail and road traffic as well cs telephone and telegraph communications.

Extend BCE Power Line To Silver Creek The long-awaited extension of services to the Silver Creek area near Hope is now under way, with completion of hole digging for the necessary poles from the Trans-Canada highway a total distance of about 3.000 feet. Poles and linesmen will follow the hole-digging crews next week to complete the job, made difficult by a considerable depth of hard-frozen snow. Approximately five dwellings will receive BCER power and light from the new extension, to begin with, and it is anticipated that eventually all the cottages in the area, formerly the married quarters of the Silver-Skagit Logging Company and now privately occupied, will come into the scheme. The latter are now serviced by the old hydro which supplied the logging company. The contract for the extension has been let to Hume and Rumble.

Butter Stocks Show Increase Agricultural Products Board this week noted a marked 'mprovement in the butter supply position as compared with a year ago. The Dominion Bureau of Statistics reported storage stocks of butter at December 1, 1951, as 57,744.000 pounds as compared with pounds on the same date a year ago. This increase of pounds over last year is significant in view of the fact that on May 1, 1951, storage stocks of butter were 18,256,000 pounds below those at the same date last year. The board attributes the improvement in supply to the fact that during the past seven months. May to November inclusive, butter production was 205,792,000 pounds or 2 per cent higher than production during the same seven months in 1950, and that during the same period butter consumption had declined by some pounds or 2.8 per cent as compared to last year for the same period.

Phone 7032 Jack Northcote or PHONE BILL WOSK 5552 His year-end report showed that, in spite of increased membership, the federation operated, at a loss of $2797 for the year.

Expenses were up $3787. Increased membership resulted from association of six new farmer groups with the federation, bringing in a total of 1562 new members. Financial difficulties within three small affiliated groups resulted in their resignation and a loss of 22 members, he said. One of the main achievements cf the year was removal of tariffs on three classes of farm equipment being imported from the U.S., the secretary-manager reported. Three resolutions asking for removal of tariffs on three classes of farm equipment were passed at the 1950 convention ajjd were presented as a single resolution by the Canadian federation of agricul ture to the cabinet.

Dr. Hope, the federation's economist, later prepared a more com plete brief which was presented to the minister of "When Mr. Abbott brought down his budget before the house, the tariffs on all this equipment had been removed. "If your federation had done nothing else this last year, you would have been well served by the many thousands of dollars farmers will save over the next few years in buying of equipment." Other work accomplished in Ottawa included presentation of a brief supporting the color ban on margarine before a select standing committee, and also individual canvassing of members of parliament. The subsequent vote in the house supported the color ban.

The federation pressed Ottawa to accept payment in the form of electrical power from the American government's. Libby dam power development in southeast B. C. Exemption of irrigation equipment from the 3 per cent sales tax was asked. This was turned down by the cabinet but remains on the federation's agenda for further work, Mr.

Walls said. The government was also asked to assist in rehabilitation of areas which have been hampered by incorrect land use, or lack of water. No action was taken by the government, however. The same suggestion was included in the brief presented to the provincial minister of agriculture at the 1951 con vention last month at Mission. The federation endorsed a mo- i tion that the floor price for butter be upped from 58 to 63 V2 cents.

1 Two weeks later the government i increased the floor to 63 cents, he said. Considerable work was also done advising on national marketing legislation. 1 rjj mm 'I job 1 I A.
