18A THE CHILLIWACK PROGRESS, Wednesday, January 26, 1977 Soccer Inkers and United return to valley league play Chilliwack United team manager Bert Larson said his team showed good control of the game throughout. He gave at least some of the credit to Romero at midfield. Only other game on Sunday involving a local team saw Ab-botsford shutout the Chilliwack Royals 2-0. the first time and they were able to use him to great advantage as a controlling midfielder. Sasquatch scored goals in the first and second half, both on penalty kicks.

Romero scored the fourth goal for Chilliwack in the second half, making the score 4-1 at that point. If Cheam Curling Club's open bonspiel A event came down to a battle of a couple of contenders in the Chilliwack Curling Club regular men's league. Dwayne Clegg's foursome won the game on the final end by a slim 9-8 over Terry Gregory. Clegg came back from a 5-0 deficit after four ends, scoring four on the fifth end to make things tight. In the remaining two events Richard from Delta, a former school boy winner, soundly defeated Gord Tufford of the Jericho club 8-3 to win event.

Richard actually won it in the sixth end, adding three points to their slim 4-3 lead. In event, Cheam's own Harry Brooks held the edge over Royal City's Bill Cole, Junior. That edge seemed to slip a bit on the ninth end when Cole counted two to tie the score 7-7. Brooks scored two more on the tenth to win 9-7. We know our business.

In A event, Clegg moved into the finals by defeating fellow club member Jim Griffith while Gregory edged out Cheam's Paul Engelbrecht 6-5. Gregory won it by drawing to the button on the last rock of the game with the teams tied 5-5. Members of the winning Clegg rinks were skip Dwayne Clegg, third George Heagy, second Alan Coxworth and lead Ted Clegg. Runners-up were skip Terry Gregory, third Ken Strueby, second Reg Gregory and lead Kevin Heath. Englebrecht possibly won the game that carried the most interest on Saturday evening when he defeated Royal City's Bernie Sparkes.

Sparkes appeared to be off his game but Englebrecht earned full marks for being on when he had to be. Tufford moved into the finals of event by defeating the Jake MacKenzie-Dennis Padgham rink from Chilliwack while Bob Burke's rink lost out to Richard in the semi-finals. Members of the Harry Brooks rink included the skip, third Dick Carter, second Jim McCaughan and lead Bill Lewington. Brooks defeated Bill MacDonald in the semi-finals for event while Cole eliminated Chester Stachera from Chilliwack. Both finalists in A event as well as some others among the 48 rinks who entered at Cheam are expected to be at Hope this week for that club's men's open bonspiel.

It's that time of year. Chilliwack Kin edge Yarrow Two local teams which played in division one of the MSA Minor Soccer Association last fall played one another on the weekend. Chilliwack Kinsmen defeated Yarrow Kin in two very close games, the first for the 15 and 16 year olds coming on Saturday when Chilliwack won 3-2. John Bartlett scored twice and Phillip Wallace had the other for Chilliwack while Allan Epp and Eric Steif scored for Yarrow. Outstanding players were Chilliwack's John Bartlett and Jim Teskey and Yarrow's John Wedel and Don Friessen.

Second game of the weekend, rescheduled from December 11 to Sunday, saw Chilliwack shutout Yarrow 1-0. Phillip Wallace scored the only goal of the game. Outstanding players were Chilliwack's Greg See, Russ Keating and Jim Teskey as well as Yarrow's Eric Steif. Jim Teskey in goal for Chilliwack was the difference in both games. Three local teams in the Fraser Valley Soccer League returned to action on Sunday after close to a month of no games.

Chilliwack Lakers of the first division showed their layoff but still had little trouble in disposing of third division Douglas College 8-3. Bob Massie opened scoring for the Lakers with goals at the 15 and 40 minute marks of the opening half. Rick Fast added his first of four goals to put the Lakers ahead 3-0 at half time. Lakers' Mr. Fast came on with his three more goals in the second half while Barry Mclntyre had one of his own.

Douglas College managed three goals, two of them on penalty kicks. Four goals and a consistently skillful effort marked the play of Fast. One of the Lakers' strikers Nick Todd was moved back to link and he came up with a fine game in the words of coach Allan Toop. "We were, however, fortunate that after that layoff we played a third division team," Toop added. This second round of Packenham Cup play will be followed this Sunday with the Lakers' second round of Bradner Cup.

They are scheduled to play Sukh Sagar at Fleetwood Park in Surrey. Meanwhile third division Chilliwack United defeated Sas-quatch 4-2 in the first round of Bradner Cup play on Sunday. United went into the game missing three of their key players from earlier in the season. Leading scorer Dan Talbot is reportedly now working in Alberta while Roy Dickey and Fred Martin were not able to make the game. CSSS basketball teams split with Aldergrove Seniors, Legion, leaders at local curling club Bundle girls, Surrey boys vinners A D. Rundle Junior Secondary grade 8 girls and the grade 8 boys from Johnston Heights Junior Secondary in Surrey emerged as the leaders in two basketball tournaments held on the weekend. Rundle girls defeated Chilliwack Junior 24-16 in the final while Agassiz downed Hope 27-20 to take third place overall in the six team tournament. Vedder Junior downed Rosedale 31-27 to place them in fifth and sixth place. All games in the tournament were played on Friday and Saturday at Chilliwack Senior Secondary School.

In boys play Johnston Heights, the only team in either event not from the upper Fraser Valley, won all three of its games to place first. Chilliwack Junior boys posted a record of two wins and a loss for second place and Vedder Junior's one win and two losses made that team third. Next on the junior secondary school basketball agenda are grade 10 team tournaments on February 4 and 5, the boys playing at Sardis Secondary and the girls at Vedder Junior. Terri Neetz had 20 and Linda Wiebe had 12 points. Chilliwack boys played two games on Thursday, losing a close one 61-58 to Agassiz as Alvin Bartel scored 16 points. Chilliwack then came back to defeat Garibaldi 65-55 as Pat Ugmundson had 12 points and Steve Kowbel and Bill Ogmund-son had 10 apiece. This Thursday the senior girls will host Burnaby South at 6 p.m. while the boys host Fort St.

John at 7:30. Chilliwack girls will play Salmon Arm on Friday at 4 p.m. at Chilliwack Junior Secondary's gymnasium. involved the Alex Souter, Russ Trites and George Dixon rinks. Souter won it, defeating Trites on Saturday morning and Dixon that afternoon.

Skip Alex Souter is joined on the rink by third Neil Price, second Gord Morrison and lead Don MacGregor. Chilliwack Senior Secondary girls tried their zone basketball defence on Aldergrove on Tuesday and came away with a victory. Chilliwack girls held a slim 20-17 lead after an entire second quarter of trying the zone. In the third the girls came out and scored 10 straight points to take a 30-17 lead. Coach Terri McGovern switched her girls back to man-to-man and they controlled the game from there.

Final score was 45-28 for Chilliwack. Linda Wiebe had 20 points and 13 rebounds while Terri Neetz had nine points and 10 rebounds. Meanwhile the Chilliwack Frontiersmen boys lost 61-56 to Aldergrove boys on Tuesday after trailing by about 10 points for much of the game. Don Enns had 14 points and Alvin Bartel 13 for Chilliwack. Last year's winner of the Guy Philip curling trophy Lyle Reichert managed to collect a few more points than Joe Had-field's rink from Chilliwack to win the Cloverdale honors. Members of the Hadfield rink were skip Joe Hadfield, third Si Foth, second Bud Thompson and lead Larry Hardy. Royal Canadian Legion zone playoffs were held at the Chilliwack Curling Club on the weekend. This three way contest Curling club league play has two more first round winners. John Vollebregt's rink won the Dairymen's round and Rod MacKenzie won for the Businessmen's league.
