A. MARSDEN 794-7171 J. LUSCOMBE 792-6964 B. ABBOTT 795-3379 7314 i Following is the complete text of school district superintendent Dr. J.

Innes Mac-dougall's statement concerning the re-opening of schools in the district. School District 33 (Chilliwack) appreciates the opportunity of presenting some of the problems regarding school closures during this period of difficult weather. Our paramount consideration is the safety of the children, both those who are transported by bus and those who must make their own way to school over icy roads or snow plugged sidewalks. We must always bear in mind the obligation, not only to get children to school, but to return them home several hours later during which weather conditions may change drastically. At the present time it is impossible for our buses to operate on their normal routes because of the serious drifting on all north-south roads.

As it seems likely that the present weather pattern will hold for a few days it has been decided to attempt a partial opening of schools using modified bus routes. The following arrangements will be in effect until further notice. It is obvious that a sudden change in the weather may necessitate their cancellation at any time. I should like to impress on parents the importance of getting their children to school if this can be done safely but the parallel importance of parents making their own decision as to whether or not it is safe for their children to get to school. It is impossible for us to know the exact conditions in every part of the community.

At the present time it seems unwise to have our youngest students go to school. For this reason kindergarten classes will not operate until further notice. Conditions at the present time make it impossible to open the following schools. These are the schools which will remain closed: Atchelitz, Camp River, Chadsey, East Chilliwack, Evans, Fairfield Island, Greendale, Lotbiniere, Miller, Ryder Lake, Sunshine Drive. All other elementary schools will open today (Wednesday).

Very little busing can be supplied for elementary students under present conditions. No buses will run north of Yale Road East excepting the bus which transports Grade VII students from Strathcona to Central. Promontory bus No. 5 will not operate. No busing will be provided for special class children but where schools are open special classes will operate.

The following are the secondary school arrangements: Rosedale Junior Secondary School, which depends very largely on buses, will not open. All other secondary schools will open today. The following are the bus arrangements: These buses will operate normally: From Yarrow buses 1, 5 and 12; from Columbia Valley bus the Chilliwack Lake Road bus No. 6 from Cheam View via Rosedale to Chilliwack Senior Secondary. Some buses will operate on modified routes.

These are: bus 4 from Rosedale to Chilliwack Senior Secondary which will travel along Yale Road East only. Bus 9 from Rosedale on Hope River and Camp River roads only to Wells Road, Yale Road and Chilliwack Senior Secondary. Bus 10 will run from the Vedder Canal on 401 and Yale Road West only to A. D. Rundle Junior Secondary.

Buses 2, 3 and 7 which serve Sardis Secondary School will run on South Sumas, Blackburn and Keith-Wilson Roads only. This loop service will begin at approximately 8:00 a.m. The following buses will not operate until further notice: No. 5, Promontory-River Road, No. 11, Prairie Central, No.

13. Chilliwack Central and No. 14, Ryder Lake. The Sunshine Drive buses will not operate. The involved nature of the preceding arrangements indicates the difficluties of the problems with which we are faced.

These arrangements will make possible attendance by the very large majority of our students. We will be operating 21 of our 33 schools beginning Wednesday and continuing as long as conditions remain as at present. Rearrangements have been necessary at our adult education level also. The following night classes which have been continuing from last term will be in session: Wednesday, January 22, basic English, science 10, English 12, preparatory mathematics, history 12-101, typing 1, bookkeeping 1. Thursday, January 23: French 9, 10, literature 12, shorthand and industrial first aid.

Hobby and cultural classes which were to commence at January 20, 21, 22 and 23 are postponed until next week to commence January 27, 28, 29 and 30. Seeks Flood Control Plan Chilliwack Dyking Board has made application to participate in the federal pro-' vincial flood control program, following a conference in Victoria between dyking board representatives and B. E. Marr, chairman of the flood control program committee. Alderman A.

S. Barker, dyking board chairman is hopeful that much of the ARDA proposals can also be incorporated in the joint program. Mr. Marr indicated that all streams and ditches leading "directly to dykes" can be included. Such streams as Chilliwack Creek, McGillivray Creek, Hope and Camp rivers will be included, but "how far upstream remains to be seen" Alderman Barker indicates.

Joint program committee will assign a priority to Chil-liwack's application, and prepare design and cost estimates. When cost-sharing formula has been agreed upon formal application for provincial and federal funds will be sought. Standings Standings in the Midget division of the Minor Hockey League are: Pts. Rundle By NANCY TURLEY and JULIE SHARP In spite of the snow there has not been a freeze on activities in A. D. Rundle. All around the school are posters encouraging students to join the new dance club. Pamela Tetz and Renee Klassen have begun to organize this club for grade nine and ten stu dents.

The art of ballroom dancing (rumbas and such) is the club's intention. They will probably be meeting Wednes day evenings. Some of Mr. Richer's drama students are learning their new scripts for the play "The Miracle Worker." The play will be presented sometime in April. There will be six pub lic performances.

All of which are highly recommended. (We hope you take the Mr. Richer is also working hard on a secret project in Room 98. More about this secret later. The science fair committee consisting of our science teachers, headed by Mr.

Stol-lee as chairman, have been planning Rundle's fourth annual science fair scheduled for late in March. Now, the library, with the students doing their science, socials and English assignments, is the busiest room in the school. Grudge Match Free -For -All Wrestling main event in Evergreen Hall last night was a short wild one, ending in a double disqualification after the referee had been incapacitated. In what was billed as a "grudge match," Dutch Savage and Dean Higuchi both were cut and bleeding while fighting outside the ring. Once back in, they put the referee out of commission before other wrestlers could get them out of the ring.

Match was declared no contest. In the four-man tag team bout, Crusher Stasiak and John Tolos took the first and third falls to defeat Don Leo Jonathan and Bobby Shane, in the two out of three fall, 45 minute contest. First bout of the evening, a one fall event between Johnny Kostas and Bad Boy Shields went the full 15 minutes in a draw. In the other one fall event. Bob Brown defeated Eric Froelich.
