After tho addresses the chief item of interest was a spirited baseball match between nines from Clicam and Chilliwack, during which both teams showed good play.

The Cheam bnttary was composed of Messrs T. Brealey and Gibson whilo I. Johnson twirled tho sphers and (J. B. Read and Jno Holland donned the mask for the.

Chilliwacks. During the first innings Brealey's curves seemed to puz.le the "Wadsets," but they got onto him la'er and piled up a seoro of 21 runs to Cheaiu's 13. Some very clover base runniug was douu and there was considerable god individual play. With a little more practice the boys would put up an exceedingly strong game. Mr.

R. H. Cairus umpired the game to the satistactiou of all. In the evening games were carried on out doors and dancing continued in the Hall till late hour. Tho celebration closed with a brilliant display of lire Ladles Rifle Contest on Jubilee Day at Nicola.

(Extract from Vancouver World.) The second event on the programme was the competition for a baodsome 22 oalibre Stevens' Favorite rifle, presented by A. B. (Harrington, and open to ladies only. The range was 00 yards, and the shooting off hand, from the shoulder, three shot being allowed each competitor. Eight contestants answered to the roll call, eaoh of whom exhibited a fa miliarity with the rifle, that I am bold to state cannot be excelled in the Province.

Out of a possible total of 130 the four highest on the list were Miss Aliee Greaves 10, Mrs. Sutton 13, Miss Mary Greaves 13. MissMelhuisb 13. Miss Alice Greaves therefore secured the coveted prizo. Aluturevont was the contest for a beautiful Winchester rifle, valued at $20, aud presented by Mr.

Blair of the Forks. From this the "cracked shots were barred," any one having taken prizea or scored 65 per cent, or upwards at any public contest during the past year, would not be allowed to compete. The ranges were 50 yards stand, ing, and 100 any position. At the close of the contest the score stood: Miss Mel huish, 23, out of a possible CO, who accordingly captured the Winchester, E. Godly, 28, who received a set of reloading tools as a second prizo, and Mr.

Mc Gillvary 20. It is worthy of note to call the attention of the ladies of other localities to the excellent shooting made by the ladies corps of Nicola and that notwithstanding the high reputation by many of the competitors as skilled marksmen, Miss Melliuish, of Nicola Lake, scored the highest mark of any single shot during the day. It is also pleasing to note tuat although the ehsl lenge extended 50 mile, and upwards, every one of the prizes without exeep lion was captured by our city competit ors, a feat of which we all claim a share with pardonable pride.aud for which the successful competitors deserve and are hereby tenderod our warmest thanks and most hearty congratulations. Editor Progress: The question of licenses if one which i greatly disturbing the minds of business men in the village of Chilliwack and indeed all over tho municipality, and not only in Chil liwhack is this matter receiving attention, for in ouo other town at least, in the Province, parlies are refusing to pay a license on the groud that gross injustice is being done in demanding a license from some doing a very small business in excess of that demanded from others whose business is very much larger. If our own Chilliwack Council think it right and just that a tax in the shape of a license should be imposed on all classes of business carried cn iu the village I hae not a word to say against it.

But I have a complaint to make, anil what I complain of, is the injustice done to some and the favour shown to others. The late Mr. Kitchen favored the doing away with a license on all businesses except where spirituous liquors are sold whieh business must of necessity be regulated, aud therefore must be licensed. would of course be well to impose a lax on peddlers and transcient dealers, and if the entire li.t Merchants, Lawyers, Doctors, Dentists, Auctioneers, Real Estate Erookers, Conveyances and Fire and Life Insurance Agents, and Me ohanics were called upon to pay a license there would probably be little or no kicking, but the present system, if it can be ealUd a system, must be unsatisfactory to tho Council as well a. uujust and oppressive in the case of those who are paying a license.

I have no sympathy with the chronio grumbler, but where manifest wrong, in levying and collecting municipal taxes exist, the Council should surely not hesitate to look into the matter and rectify such wrong where found to exist, as a matter of fact a heavy tax is at present imposed on some parties in Chilliwack in the shape of a business license while other parties not taxed one rent for the privilege o.f doing business, are doiug possibly as much as his unfortunate neighbor who is heavily taxed. Ought these things so to be? I would resptctfullv call attention of the Reeve and Council to this matter, and more especially so, as in tho near future the Council are by petition, to be respectfully requested to give some attention to eiibiiug wrongs.
